Officially Withdraw Your Child

If your child is already attends a New Jersey public school and you would like to begin homeschooling then you must notify your child’s school and the district superintendent that you will be withdrawing your child.

Follow these simple steps to officially withdraw your child by letter.

  1. Copy and paste the sample New Jersey Withdrawal Letter below in a new document to print.
  2. Enter your personal information in the brackets and print 4 copies (one for the principal, one for the superintendent, and a copy of each for your records).
  3. Mail a signed copy of your letter to your district superintendent’s office and your local principal by Certified Mail.

NOTE If the school writes back asking for more information, download and send them a copy of NJ State Board of Education’s “Frequently Asked Questions About Homeschooling in New Jersey”.


Sample New Jersey Withdrawal Letter

As a courtesy, I am sending this letter to inform you that my [name of child], who attended [school name], will be homeschooled, starting [date], in accordance with New Jersey Statutes Annotated 18A:38-25.

If you have any questions, please send them in writing to the above address.
