Request Your Child’s Records
After you have officially withdrawn your child from a public school then you can request a copy of your child’s records. Make sure to send this letter within 10 days from sending your letter of withdrawal or the school may not honor it.
Follow these steps to send in a written request for your child’s records.
- Copy and paste the sample Illinois Student Records Request Letter below into a new document to print.
- Enter your personal information in the brackets and print 2 copies.
- Mail a signed copy of your letter to the school by certified mail. You can also hand deliver it but make sure to note the date and have the principal sign your copy.

In compliance with Chapter 1, Section 375.75 of the Illinois Administrative Code, we are writing to request that a Certified Copy of [child’s name’s] records be forwarded to us.This letter also meets the requirements of Section 2-3.13a of the Illinois School Code as changed by Public Act 093-0859 requiring written notification of successful transfer of the student.Your prompt assistance in this matter will be appreciated, as it will enable us to complete our files.
